Pre-K for MA will provide a targeted, phased-in plan for state-funded pre-Kindergarten in the mixed-provider system for 3- and 4-year-old children from underperforming school districts with traditionally poor third-grade-reading proficiency levels.
Too many children show up for school already behind and too many of them will never catch up. High-quality early education has been shown to have short and long-term impact on children’s educational, health, social, and economic outcomes.
Under the bill filed by Education Committee Co-Chair Rep. Alice Peisch and Senator Sal DiDomenico, underperforming districts will develop Pre-K implementation programs that must be approved by the state Department of Early Education and Care and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. School districts will have two years to fully implement Pre-K programs in their communities. The bill allows districts to provide public Pre-K classes and to work with high-quality private sector organizations to meet the needs of children and families in each community.
Please take a few minutes of your day and send your legislators an email letting them know that you want expanded high-quality Pre-K in Massachusetts.
